Hydrogen: Gray, Blue & Green

Hydrogen has potential as a clean fuel depending on how it is produced. If used as an alternative fuel in a fuel cell system, hydrogen recombines with oxygen and produces only water and electricity as byproducts. Hydrogen powered vehicles emit water vapor from their tailpipes instead of greenhouse gas emissions.

There are multiple classifications of hydrogen fuel based on how it is produced. Gray hydrogen is produced from natural gas using steam methane reformation, which releases carbon dioxide. Blue hydrogen is also produced from natural gas, but the carbon emissions are captured and stored. Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy to power electrolysis, splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen with zero carbon emissions.
